Laura's not only a cherished member but she's also a handbuilding teacher at Ford City Potter, and an accomplished artist in her own right.
When did you first fall in love with pottery?
I fell in love during a beginner Handbuilding class with Lisa last Spring. Although I had tried the wheel many years ago, I wasn’t in love immediately and I had no idea what Handbuilding was!
How has working with clay made a difference in your life?
Learning more about clay has opened up another door for my creativity. It is a very grounding material that forces me to slow down. It gives me a great sense of peace.
Do you have a favorite piece you’ve made so far and what is the story behind it?
I don’t have a favourite piece! I just keep experimenting and playing. The practice itself is my favourite :)

Favorite tool?
The slab roller.
Favorite clay?
I love that speckled clay!!!

Best local spot?
I loved Pressure Drop and am really looking forward to checking out Circuit soon! Chance Coffee is also at the top of the list. Everyone that works there is lovely and welcoming.
What do you like to listen to when you work?
My favourites are Lo-Fi Hip Hop or some kind of Chill playlist when I’m in the studio.

What is your next pottery goal, or skill you’re most keen to learn?
I’ve returned to the wheel in the last few months. I would love to get better at making a repeatable shape. That’s currently not a strength that I have!

What is the best part of being a member of a pottery studio?
I really enjoy the collaborative environment. All of us have a common interest and everyone that I’ve met so far is keen to share their experience with it. I’ve learned so much from the other members. Having a community to create with is fantastic!
