Class Description

Surface Design for Functional Pottery Saturday mornings in February, join local potter and sgraffito master Tricia Leach for this intensive 4-week course exploring surface decoration techniques for wheel-thrown work. Perfect for potters ready to elevate their functional pieces with sophisticated carved designs. In the first two weeks, you'll throw and trim a cohesive set of functional pottery—mugs, bowls, plates, or vessels that work together as a collection. The final two weeks focus on transforming these pieces through underglaze application and sgraffito carving techniques, learning to create depth, pattern, and visual interest through layered surface design, and skillful use of glazing. Leave with a beautifully designed set of functional pottery that showcases your personal aesthetic and newly refined skills. Prerequisites: Wheel throwing experience required. Students should be comfortable centring, throwing basic forms, and trimming.

Studio Policies Students are not permitted to load, unload, or operate pottery kilns. Keep hair tied back for safety. Avoid wearing loose articles of clothing or jewelry that could pose hazards. Closed-toe and closed-heel footwear must be worn in the pottery studio. Do not operate any equipment without the presence of an instructor. We are a scent-free environment.
