A pottery journey that started with a casual drop-in class...

1. When did you fall in love with pottery?
I came to a drop-in class with a friend in Feb 2025 and instantly felt welcomed into the space and at peace; all the chaos and anxiety from my day just went away.
2. What have been the benefits of working with clay?
Handmade pieces make great gifts and I can attempt to make pieces that I see in stores vs. buying them, and I think that pottery has really helped with alleviating a lot of the stress and anxiety from life.
3. Do you have a favourite piece you’ve made so far? What’s the story behind it?
Any piece that survives trimming, bisque and glaze-firing and looks good at the end is a favourite of mine! I will say that my latest butter bell was a huge success because I measured everything correctly this time and I was jumping for joy at 11pm lol

4. Favourite tool?
Mudtools Do-All trimming tool. Game-changing.
5. Favourite clay?
Reclaim and speckled are great, and I love mixing the white and black to get a marble effect.
6. Favourite time of day to come to the studio?
Evenings/nighttime. I find it nice to wind down doing something I love.

7. Best local food spot?
Sawyer’s is conveniently a few doors down and has amazing sandwiches. If I’m feeling dumplings/Chinese food, I’m always torn between Dumpling Time and Shanghai Bistro - I’m a sucker for soup dumplings.
8. What do you like to listen to when you work?
Psychological thriller audiobooks (not always the smartest idea when I’m the only one in the studio at 10pm since I get scared and startle easily). So if I seem a bit jumpy at the studio, that’s why!
9. What’s your next pottery goal, or the skill you’re most keen to learn?
I want to get better at throwing more consistently (shape and size (and get better at measuring)). Butter bells have been my latest challenge, and I’m finally understanding the callipers a little bit better (yay!)
I’d also love to learn handbuilding when I have some time to attend some of FCP’s classes.

10. Best part of being a member of Ford City Potters Studio?
Definitely the community and people I’ve met :)
