Matthew: Oban Pottery

When did you first fall in love with pottery?

I’ve been influenced by a variety of ceramic works my entire life, early memories of my parents buying work while travelling, then having these collections ornament our home growing up.  Wheel-thrown pottery is where my heart lies.  I have had many great teachers over the years, and I remain in love with clay work and am inspired daily.

How has working with clay made a difference in your life?

There have been countless benefits, when I think of the knowledge acquired and the creatives and luminaries that are attached with clay arts that have taught and challenged my work and imagination.

Do you have a favorite piece you’ve made so far and what is the story behind it?

Lately I dig pottery with earthy and organically formed  surfaces. I'm very fond of saggar fired pottery and the unexpected results.

Favorite tool?

It must be the wheel, or a good rubbery rib.

Matthew also teaches Wednesday drop-in classes and starting Jan, 2025, beginners wheel on Thursdays.

Favorite clay?

I enjoy working with a clay that is strong enough not to tire quickly and is elastic enough to push some boundaries—red clays.

Best local food?

I enjoy a dark roasted coffee with a crusty croissant from Chance Coffee.

What do you like to listen to when you work?

It's been anything Handel as of late, it’s the holidays.

What is your next pottery goal, or skill you’re most keen to learn?

I would like to learn more about soda firing kilns.

What is the best part of being a member of a pottery studio?

The beautiful creative ruha - (hovering spirit) of members making, at times is magical and healing. Being in a place where others share a love for clay and its many possibilities is enchanting.

You can find Matthew's work at Oban Pottery. (Oban is a Scottish seaside town.)
