Carving a New Creative Path in Pottery with Sobia Hussain

When Did You First Fall in Love with Pottery?
I first discovered my love for pottery in high school. Back in Grade 11, I enrolled in a pottery course. From that moment, I was hooked! I still cherish some of my early pieces. That was back in 1998.
The Transformative Power of Clay
Working with clay has profoundly impacted my life. After many years, returning to pottery has proven therapeutic. Connecting with the earth through this art form is grounding. There’s something special about using my hands to create.
Pottery is organic and natural. It connects us to our shared humanity. This art form is one of the earliest functional expressions passed down through civilizations. Isn’t that remarkable?
A Favorite Piece and Its Story
One of my favorite creations is a set of mugs inspired by Van Gogh. I used the sgraffito technique to bring them to life. I admire Van Gogh's artistic journey. Despite its tragic end, it symbolizes how messy and beautiful life can be.
I sold one of these special mugs. However, I kept one for myself as a cherished memory. Each time I use it, I remember the joy of creating it.
My Go-To Tool
Recently, I treated myself to a DiamondCore Carving Tool. This tool is perfect for my sgraffito work, helping me create grooves and negative space on my clay surfaces. I find the sgraffito technique aligns with my artistic style.

The Clay I Love
I have a strong preference for red clay. Its deep hue and texture are captivating. The vibrant underglazes contrast beautifully against it. I’m excited to experiment with black clay in the future!
My Favorite Local Spots for Inspiration
I love hanging out at local cafes where I can enjoy coffee and converse with friends. Windsor has many unique, independently owned coffee shops. Taloola Cafe, Cafe Amor, and Troya Turkish Grocery & Bakery are favorites. I can't choose just one!
Music and Podcasts While Crafting
Lately, I’ve started listening to podcasts while working at the studio. It’s a fantastic way to learn while I create. My current favorites include ‘Diary of a CEO by Steve Bartlett,’ ‘Feel Better, Live More with Dr Rangan Chatterjee,’ and ‘The Mel Robbins Podcast.’
Future Pottery Goals
I have big plans for my pottery journey! I want to focus on developing my handbuilding skills. While I’ve enjoyed wheel-throwing, it’s time to explore different techniques. Handbuilding allows for freeform creativity, inspiring me to push my artistic boundaries.

The Joy of Being Part of a Pottery Community
Being a member of a pottery studio has been fulfilling. I truly appreciate the community energy at Ford City Potters. Everyone is helpful and warm. Lisa and Gisele have created a caring and intentional space.
As soon as I step into the studio, I feel a rush of creativity. It's undoubtedly my favorite place to be!
Conclusion: A Passion Immersed in Art and Community
Pottery is not just an art form for me; it's a way of life. It connects me to nature and my community. Whether I am crafting mugs or experimenting with techniques, each experience is a learning opportunity. I eagerly look forward to the journey ahead and invite others to join this beautiful world of creativity. Pottery offers a unique path for self-expression, reflection, and connection.
